Consumer Alert:
Yaz/Yasmin: False advertising and women endangerment
By Welch, Gold & Siegel – Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., Pennsylvania
In the prime of their 20-something and 30-something lives, women are suffering from birth control pill-causing blood clots that lead to stroke, heart attack, and pulmonary embolism. Why?
Bayer AG's multi-million dollar ad campaign which misrepresents what Yaz, Yasmin, and Yasminelle can do.
According to the Food & Drug Administration's complaint, Bayer concealed and minimized the serious risks associated with Yaz. Television commercials deceptively promoted Yaz products for uses not approved by FDA regulators.
Yaz wrongly claimed it effectively treated the symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) when – in reality -- it has not been approved for PMS. Without actually saying PMS, the TV commercials named the symptoms associated with PMS such as bloating, fatigue, muscle aches, irritability.
PMS is a huge problem suffered by millions of women. By claiming to treat these symptoms, Yaz swayed women who wanted more than just a birth control pill. Bayer has been so successful that in 2008, Yaz products earned $1.8 billion in sales.
Not all birth control products have these life threatening side effects. Talk to your healthcare professional about options. The pharmaceutical company with the biggest birth control ad budgets might not be right for you.
Yaz, Yasmin, and Yasminelle contain the active ingredient drospirenone which studies have shown to increase potassium levels in the blood leading to a life-threatening condition called hyperkalemia.
Hyperkalemia may disrupt normal heart rhythms causing blood clots to form which can lead to stroke, heart attack, and pulmonary embolism.
Bayer has always been perceived as a brand women can trust…until now. Many Yaz lawsuits have been filed including in Pennsylvania. So far one woman has died.
Please warn the women in your life about the dangers of Yaz.
