Pre-Paid Legal Advice:
Motorcycle accidents in Pennsylvania, as well as nationwide, are on the rise.
By Welch, Gold & Siegel – Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., Pennsylvania
In 2008, there were 237 motorcycle deaths in PA and 4,077 motorcycle injuries. In 2007, there were 225 motorcycle deaths in PA.
Some reasons for increased motorcycle deaths are all the bars hosting biker nights, the explosion of dealerships and custom builders. Nationwide motorcycle registrations jumped 63 percent from 3,826,373 in 1997 to 6,227,146 in 2005. Sadly, motorcycle deaths have increased disproportionately from 2,116 in 1997 to a then record breaker of 4,810 in 2006.
What's worse is that a motorcycle accident is more likely to end in death than its passenger vehicle counterparts.
More than 25 percent of all fatally injured motorcyclists had a blood alcohol level over the legal limit of .08 g/dl. Even one beer can impair your vision, your decision-making ability, and definitely dull your coordination-reaction time causing overturning, running off the road, and falling.
Motorcyclists are more at risk during inclement weather, hazardous road conditions, and the mistakes of other drivers.
Motorcyclists 20 to 29 years old continue to account for the highest number of motorcycle accident deaths. Motorcyclists more than 40 years old account for the greatest increases in motorcycle accident deaths with the 50 to 59 year old crowd having the most fatalities. This age group can afford the most powerful bikes. A bigger bike mixed with slower reaction times doesn't make a good match.
The government, insurance companies, and motorcycle riding clubs and associations are putting more emphasis on motorcycle safety and education. But it may already be too late for you and your loved one.
